Medway midwives crowned best in country

Date: 06 March 2019

Medway NHS Foundation Trust’s midwives have claimed the prestigious Royal College of Midwives (RCM) ‘Kellogg's All-Bran Midwifery Service of the Year’ Award.

The team, led by Head of Midwifery Dot Smith, was crowned as the country’s best midwifery service at a special ceremony in London on Tuesday (5 March), for showing significant improvements and innovation in the provision of maternity care.

The Trust’s midwives - who are based at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham and also work in the community - beat off competition from five other NHS trusts to add this award to their impressive collection, after winning prizes at the 2018 London Maternity and Midwifery Festival and the 2017 RCM Awards.

Medway’s Head of Midwifery, Dot Smith, said:

’’We are absolutely delighted to win this award, and to receive national recognition from our professional body, the RCM.

‘’Our midwives are truly amazing, and this award is testament to their hard work and dedication. They work tirelessly to deliver safe and high quality care, working with women, to provide a truly women-centred service.

‘’Overall, I feel incredibly proud to lead an amazing team who consistently receive wonderful feedback from patients for going the extra mile. We hope to use this as a platform to build and improve our service for mothers and their families across Medway and Swale.’’

Earlier this year, the team was ranked by patients as one of the country’s best-performing midwifery units in the 2018 Maternity Survey, while the Care Quality Commission rated the service as ‘outstanding’ for caring and ‘good’ overall during its last inspection.

Reflecting on this latest success, Medway NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive, James Devine, said:

‘‘I am so proud that the excellent work of our fantastic midwifery colleagues has been recognised by the RCM.

‘’Our maternity team is a real inspiration and an example of the brilliant care we aim to provide at Medway – this award is a true acknowledgement of the consistently outstanding job they all do. Well done to the entire team!’’

Gill Walton, RCM Chief Executive and General Secretary, said:

“I wish to congratulate each and every member of Medway’s midwifery team for all the great work they’ve done to improve the care that they deliver.

“Medway is an excellent example of a maternity service that has been consistently seeking to improve. They have an engaged, enthusiastic and empowered team, which results in high quality care for women and their babies.”

Since 2004, the RCM Annual Midwifery Awards have celebrated outstanding achievement in midwifery across the UK. This year’s event was hosted by BBC One Show presenter Alex Jones.
