Let’s celebrate NHS70!
The NHS is turning 70 on 5 July 2018 and here at Medway we are looking forward to marking the occasion with a number of activities involving our staff and local community.
Over the last 70 years, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation and become the envy of the world. We are all proud of our NHS. It has delivered huge medical advances and improvements to public health, meaning we can all expect to live longer lives.
Medway Maritime Hospital was originally a Royal Naval Hospital, opened by King Edward VII in 1905.
The NHS gained the hospital from the Royal Navy in 1961, underwent a modernisation scheme and reopened as Medway Hospital in 1965. The new name - Medway Maritime Hospital, adopted in 1999, is a reflection of its naval history.
Summer fair and open day
The centrepiece of our celebrations will be a summer fair and open day on Saturday 7 July, during the anniversary week.
We are looking forward to having stalls and games, tours, photo and art exhibitions and much more. Watch this space for updates on the activities!
We are encouraging the local community, staff, volunteers and patients to hold a NHS Big 7Tea to celebrate this milestone birthday on Thursday 5 July (or a date of your choice!). The idea is simple: get staff, retired staff, volunteers, patients, users, carers, local community groups or even your family round for a cuppa and share your NHS stories.
It is with your help, that we as a community can raise enough money for our local hospital in order for the NHS to continue for another 70 years.
So, are you ready to have a cuppa, cake and chat and give something back? Whether you’re inviting people over for a cake and catch up at home or getting together with colleagues at work, you’ll find this fundraising kit packed with top tea party tips.
The money you raise will be donated to the Medway Hospital Charity which raises funds for the wards and services provided by Medway NHS Foundation Trust.
Download the handy pack (available soon!), pick a date, invite friends and get raising money. Remember, that creativity is key, so why not embrace some curiositea and get involved to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions.
Thank you again for your support - we’re counting on your cuppa.
