Where to have your baby
Medway Maritime Hospital supports approximately 5,000 deliveries a year. We are known as a tertiary centre because of the neo-natal intensive care unit which is attached to the maternity unit. This means we take transfers of both pregnant women and newly delivered babies from across the South East, and also from London who require intensive care. You can arrange a tour of the unit through your community midwife.
The consultant obstetricians and the midwives work very hard as a team to provide a holistic approach to care for all women, regardless of their health and social needs.
All of the specialist services that you may need are all under one roof. This includes the Oliver Fisher Specialist Baby Care Unit and the Fetal Medicine Centre which has partnership with Kings College Hospital in London.
The Birth Place
The Birth Place is a midwifery-led unit at the Hospital offering a safe, relaxed environment for women and their families to deliver their babies. The emphasis is on a birth experience which involves partners at every stage, supported by a team of specialist midwives.
Our Delivery Suite provides tailored care by a multi-disciplinary team for women with more complex obstetric needs. If you are having your baby by planned caesarean section you will be cared for by our specialist team.
Having your baby in the comfort and surroundings of your own home is a realistic option for many women. Birthing at home allows women to feel more relaxed and leads to increased hormone levels which allow the labour to progress well.
