Medway NHS Foundation Trust is a public benefit corporation authorised under the National Health Service Act 2006. It operates a single site hospital based in Gillingham, Medway Maritime Hospital, serving a population of more than 400,000 across Medway and Swale.
We provide clinical services to almost half a million patients a year, including 110,000 Emergency Department attendances, 62,000 inpatient admissions, over 325,000 outpatient attendances and more than 5,100 babies were born at the hospital last year.
As an NHS Foundation Trust, we have a 25-strong Board of Governors and over 11,000 public members. With more than 4,400 members of staff, we are one of Medway’s largest employers. In addition, the Trust is supported by a thriving group of 430 volunteers across the League of Friends, Hospital Radio and the Voluntary Services Department, all of which provide valuable services on an independent, voluntary basis.
The Trust comprises three clinical directorates - Acute & Continuing Care, Co-ordinated Surgical and Women & Children’s – supported by corporate functions. Each clinical directorate has a dedicated Director of Clinical Operations, Deputy Medical Director and Deputy Director of Nursing. The Board of Directors comprises nine Executive Directors including Lesley Dwyer, Chief Executive, and six Non-Executive Directors including the Chair. The Trust has a ‘buddying’ agreement with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) to provide additional support for a range of programmes and activities undertaken by Medway NHS Foundation Trust.
