Tucked away on Level 1, just along the corridor from the Staff Restaurant and Coffee Lounge, is a small studio where Eunice Norman has spent many of her days over the past 18 years as Chair of Hospital Radio Medway.
Set up for patients and staff, the radio station has been on air throughout the hospital since 1970, free of charge.
'Our main aim is to provide in-patients with entertainment and information during their stay. We are run entirely by volunteers who go around the wards of the hospital, taking requests from patients,’ Eunice explains. ‘Programmes are run 24 hours a day, seven days a week and cover all musical tastes. Our flagship programme is the Request Show, which is on from 8pm - 10pm in the evenings and then repeated the next morning.
‘As well as being part of Medway Maritime Hospital, the radio station is a vital part of our wider community. We give local music acts the opportunity to be heard on our Live Sessions show, on Saturday from 4pm - 6pm.
‘Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply to become a volunteer with us. Over the years, many people have come to work at the radio station and enjoyed the sense of reward that comes from learning new skills and being part of a team.’
Hospital Radio Medway is entirely self-supporting and receives no funding from the Trust. It is a voluntary organisation that is part of the Medway League of Friends which runs shops in the Hospital, proceeds from which are used to fund bids for vital equipment from various departments and wards.
