Families are encouraged to be prepared for common health issues ahead of the May bank holiday weekend and the school half‑term break.
With holidays starting on Friday 22 May, families are advised to keep a good supply of essential medicines at home, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamines and indigestion remedies, and to order repeat prescriptions in good time, in case they run out while regular pharmacies are closed.
Anyone travelling should make sure they take their regular medication with them. Repeat prescriptions can be ordered quickly and easily through the NHS App, where you can also nominate a pharmacy for collection.
Parents and carers can download a booklet designed for children aged five to 11, which explains common childhood health issues, what to keep at home and what to do if a child becomes unwell.
GP practices will be closed over the bank holiday weekend, so people who feel unwell are encouraged to speak to their local pharmacist for advice rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen. Pharmacy opening times may vary, so it’s worth checking before visiting.
Urgent Treatment Centres remain open every day and can help with minor illnesses and injuries such as sprains, minor burns and broken bones. Live waiting times for local centres are available at www.kmhealthandcare.uk/urgent-care.
For urgent medical help that isn’t an emergency, people can visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111, which is free and available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
