Medway Maritime Hospital is expanding its online patient portal, Patients Know Best (PKB), so that more than 220,000 people in Medway and Swale can access more information about their hospital treatment quickly and securely.
Launched in 2023, the portal is making it easier for patients to access vital information about their care such as appointments and clinical letters.
Patients undergoing hip or knee replacement operation now have access to a library of resources, featuring detailed information and videos about their surgery, designed to address any questions they may have.
These patients will no longer need to come into the hospital prior to their operation as we aim to reduce in-person appointments by having people complete preoperative questionnaires online before surgery. This benefits patients with fewer hospital visits and cuts costs for printing, postage, and administration.
Additionally, patients can now view the reports of their X-ray results around 28 days after the scan, once these have been discussed with clinicians. Since launching this option, more than 12,000 reports have now been added to records.

Medway resident Nuala Brady-Murphy, who uses Patients Know Best, said “I have been having hospital treatment since January and received notifications that I had documents available to read through the online patient portal.
“Although I had the NHS App on my phone, Patients Know Best was new to me. I did need some help to register initially, but now it is a very straightforward process to see my appointments as they come in as well as reading any letters about my hospital treatment.”
The use of Patients Know Best by Medway and Swale residents to access appointments, hospital discharge letters, and clinic letters has resulted in over 191,000 letters not being printed or mailed, corresponding to carbon savings of 26,167kg. Additionally, since May, patients have used the portal to reschedule or cancel 2,500 appointments.
Siobhan Callanan, Interim Deputy Chief Executive at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I’m delighted that we are continuing to help make it easier for patients being treated at Medway Maritime Hospital to access important information about their care in a simple and secure way.
“As we mark the portal’s second anniversary, we continue to develop the service further such as introducing more imaging test results, helping patients to manage areas of their own care, easily and conveniently.”
Katie Bettell-Higgins, Head of Customer Success, Patients Know Best said: “It is fantastic to see the continued success and expansion of Patients Know Best in Medway and Swale.
“Patients clearly value digital access, with around 70 per cent of documents read within 48 hours. Adding new features like preoperative questionnaires and a library with post-surgery care advice will not only create a better experience for patients but also increase efficiency and savings for the Trust.”
