The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today published a report based on its inspection of Medway Maritime Hospital in August.
Although the CQC found the hospital to be “good” in terms of caring for patients, it continues to judge the hospital to be inadequate overall and highlights a number of areas for improvement.
Lesley Dwyer, Chief Executive of Medway NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I accept the conclusions of the report and am sorry that we are currently falling short of what the people of Medway and Swale deserve. We know we need to improve the services we provide and are absolutely focused on doing just that. The Trust has suffered from years of instability and poor leadership and governance. This cannot be remedied overnight.
“I recognise the challenges we face. We assessed ourselves as inadequate ahead of the inspection in the summer and have been taking action since then to improve the care we provide. However, there are a whole range of new measures we must take, immediately.”
“We will be:
- Modernising our Emergency Department, reducing the time it takes for patients to be seen and assessed
- Improving patient safety and care by minimising the number of different doctors that patients see during their stay in hospital
- Accelerating our recruitment drive to bring in the right people with the right skills. This will ensure consistent high quality care by reducing our dependency on interims and agency staff
- Continuing to improve our corporate and clinical governance, which will support both safe and high quality patient care and a productive working culture for staff
- Improving care for patients with cancer, reducing waiting times, replacing our scanners and providing additional capacity for patients to see specialists
- Working closely with our healthcare partners to ensure patients receive the right care in the community, when they are ready to leave hospital. This will free up beds for people coming into the hospital.
“I know that there is a great deal that is good in this hospital that we can build upon. We have fantastic staff who have been praised by the CQC for their compassion and support for patients, and given a “good” rating for caring. The report also shows that quick and sustained improvements are possible; a year ago our maternity department was rated as requiring improvement and it is now rated as good.
“This hospital is here to serve the people of Medway and Swale. In the next few days and weeks, we will do everything we can to address the challenges raised in the report, so that we provide the best possible healthcare that those people need and deserve.”
