The Care Quality Commission has today published a report following an inspection of infection prevention and control measures at Medway Maritime Hospital in May 2021.

The report acknowledges a number of positive observations about the Trust’s approach to infection prevention and control, but also highlights where further improvements are needed.

Inspectors praised the Trust’s open culture to infection prevention and control, with staff feeling comfortable in raising concerns to leaders – who were visible and approachable. They recognised that the Trust has a clear vision and strategy that included infection, prevention and control and was aimed at continuously improving practices. They also said that staff were focused on the needs of patients and were committed to improving services.

Following feedback from the visits, the Trust took immediate steps to carry out a number of improvements.

Chief Executive Dr George Findlay said: “Keeping patients and staff safe is always our number one priority.

“I am pleased that the CQC has acknowledged the importance that the Trust places on having robust infection prevention and control measures in place and has identified some areas of good practice. However, we know that there is still more work for us to do.

“We have implemented an improvement plan to further improve our infection prevention and control practices, and to ensure our staff are supported in consistently providing safe, high quality patient care.”

Recent improvements in infection prevention and control at the Trust include:

  • Additional staffing to support the Infection Prevention and Control Team
  • Increased compliance with infection prevention and control standards and the launch of a more robust process for investigating hospital acquired infections
  • Improved governance and audit processes to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
