Donation of quilts to provide comfort and reassurance to local children

Date: 31 May 2016

Medway Maritime Hospital was presented with a set of personalised handmade quilts last week for the benefit of local children.

The kind-hearted gesture to the Children’s Outreach and Specialist Team (COaST) was made by the Phoenix Quilters – a local community group sponsored by the Lions Club of Gillingham. The COaST is based at Medway Hospital and provides care for children with chronic illnesses in their own home.

The quilts will be especially comforting for children who spend long periods of time in hospital and can be used wherever they are, providing a constant reminder of home.

Speaking at the presentation, Lynn Leighton, COaST Matron, said: “We’re so grateful to the Phoenix Quilters for this heartfelt donation. The quilts are absolutely beautiful and will prove invaluable in providing much-needed comfort and reassurance to children when they are spending time in hospital away from the familiar surroundings of their own home.

“We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with Phoenix Quilters and the Lions Club of Gillingham in the future.”
