Patients with neurological conditions are benefiting from special wheelchairs thanks to funding from Medway League of Friends.
Vital funds raised by generous donations and profits from the charity’s hospital shop and café, and Wainscott shop, have made it possible for the hospital’s neurotherapy team to purchase four new tilt-in-space wheelchairs.

These special wheelchairs help people with neurological conditions who are unable to balance when sitting in a standard armchair or wheelchair. This supportive equipment helps them to breathe more easily, strengthen their core muscles, have meals sat at a table, and spend time outside with the support of relatives and staff.
Michael Zaremba, Team Lead and Neuro Physiotherapist at Medway NHS Foundation Trust said: “We’re really pleased to have these tilt-in-space chairs, which will significantly enhance the quality of neurotherapy services we provide to our patients. Even a relatively small change like introducing this new equipment can make a meaningful difference to their comfort and care.”
Since April this year, the charity has invested £203,926 in vital equipment including:
- cardiac monitors, which continually track the heart’s electrical activity
- a transurethral laser ablation system, which removes abnormal tissue in the bladder
- paediatric ventilators, which assist or control breathing in children
- blood gas machine, which measures gases and imbalances in blood
- spirometer, used to measure lung functionality
- replacement defibrillators, which shock a person’s heart to restore normal heartbeat.
This follows on from a generous £268,772 donated from April 2024 to March 2025, which included recliner chairs, patient monitors, bladder scanners, machines to help diagnose heart attacks and machines which create sounds for people who have no voice box after cancer treatment.
Siobhan Callanan, Interim Deputy Chief Executive at Medway NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are very grateful for the generosity and support from Medway League of Friends in helping us to put patients first.
“It’s amazing to see how these donations make a real difference in helping patients feel more comfortable during their hospital stay.”
The charity, which has supported Medway Maritime Hospital since 1961, runs the First-Rate Café and Shop at Medway Maritime Hospital and a small shop at Montgomery Court in Wainscott. It is also planning to open a shop in Sheppey Community Hospital.
