Artwork installed in Medway Maritime Hospital commemorating organ donors has won a coveted Gold Award in the FESPA International Printing Awards, held in Hamburg.

The Gift of Life, created by The Hospital Art Studio, is featured in the Atrium at Medway Maritime Hospital. This spectacular artwork, dedicated to all those who have selflessly become organ donors and their families, is four floors high and covers the wall of the hospital’s main atrium. It features over 120 birds that inhabit the Medway Estuary, each one uniquely cut out in a variety of aged metal finishes.

Medway NHS Foundation Trust, who runs Medway Hospital, has established an excellent reputation and level of expertise in organ donation, performing above the national average for the number of patients referred for organ donation and the number of organs successfully retrieved to benefit others. Last year 13 local Medway residents received life-saving, or life-changing, transplants.

Dr Paul Hayden, Clinical Lead for organ donation at the Trust said: “We’re delighted that the Gift of Life artwork celebrating those who gave the gift of life has been recognised with this award. We are always appealing for more people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register, and even more importantly, if you are on the register, let your family know. Your family’s support is still needed for donation to go ahead. It doesn’t have to be a big conversation, just have a chat.”
