In a significant first for Medway Maritime Hospital’s growing same-day surgery service, 62-year-old builder Wayne Hawkins from Sittingbourne became the first patient to undergo a day case shoulder replacement operation.
Typically, shoulder replacement patients can stay in hospital for two to three days after surgery, but thanks to careful planning and teamwork, Wayne was safely back home by early evening – and enjoying his dinner that same night.

Wayne with had been living with arthritis in both shoulders for years before undergoing the procedure earlier this year. He could no longer get comfortable, and more importantly, it was significantly affecting his mood, which is when he realised the procedure was necessary. He said: “The relief after just a few days was amazing. The movement is better already – it’s still healing, but it’s significantly improved my quality of life.”
“The experience I had was exceptional – I was home eating my dinner one-handed that evening!”
Though initially nervous, Wayne said the team at Medway quickly put him at ease: “What I experienced was second to none. The staff were brilliant, and everything ran like clockwork.”
Before the procedure, Wayne met the team involved in his care, including Prof Bijayendra Singh, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, who performed the operation (pictured).
“I was guided by the team to the operating theatre early in the morning,” said Wayne. “After surgery, I had an X-ray, recovered for a short while, and was discharged by the early evening. I couldn’t believe how smooth the process was.”
“We’re already planning surgery on my second shoulder later this year – and now that I know what to expect, I’m not worried at all.”
Prof Bijayendra Singh said: “I want to do what is best for the patient. Day surgery offers real benefits, including quicker recovery and the comfort of being in your own home that same day. If we can make that happen safely, it’s better for everyone.”
Clare Leaney, Matron, Sunderland Day Case Unit, added: “We need to shift perceptions – this is the future of healthcare. With the right support, patients who are suitable for a day operation recover faster and more comfortably.”

Following surgery, patients have an X-ray after their operation to check that all is well before being discharged. Once home, patients are supported by the Trust’s SMART team (Surgical, Medical and Acute Recovery Team), who provide a range of acute nursing, therapy care, and remote monitoring that allows patients to continue their recovery at home.
Prof Bijayendra Singh highlighted the collaboration behind this operation and said: “This isn’t just about one team – it’s a whole Trust effort, with multiple teams involved. Anaesthetics, recovery, imaging, and our SMART team all play a part. We’re proud of what’s been achieved.”
He also offered reassurance for anyone feeling uncertain about surgery: “If you’re coming in for day surgery and you’re nervous, ask to speak to your surgeon. Write down all the questions you have – and ask them all. We want to do all we can to help to put your mind at rest.”
