Meet Jarvis, the latest volunteer to join Medway Maritime Hospital. We’re shining a light on the three-and-a-half-year-old Welsh Terrier and his owner, Graham Hill from Gillingham, as part of Volunteer’s Week (Monday 3 to Sunday 9 June).
Jarvis, our latest recruit as a hospital therapy dog, is already helping to bring comfort and happiness to patients, visitors and staff on his regular visits to the hospital’s wards.
Having recently retired from a career in IT, Graham was looking to widen his volunteering work to keep his social interaction going. It was suggested Jarvis would make a great therapy dog after talking to somebody he knew from the hospital.
An initial conversation with Zoe Goodman, the hospital’s Voluntary Services Manager led to Graham and Jarvis undertaking an assessment period to make sure they were suitable to join the team.
Graham said: “We’re loving it so far. It seems Jarvis never tires of being told he’s handsome and having a fuss made of on our visits to the hospital.
“Living locally, we aim to come in at least twice a week, sometimes for a random walkabout, other times because there has been a specific request.
“I’m really touched by the impact Jarvis and the other therapy dogs have on the patients and staff we’ve encountered. It’s a pleasure to spread a little of the joy, I and my family get from Jarvis, with my wider local community.”
Zoe said: “I know how much patients, visitors and staff enjoy and take comfort from seeing our therapy dogs around the hospital, so it is great to welcome Graham and Jarvis to the team.”
Here at Medway Maritime Hospital, we have 91 volunteers who give around 2,500 hours a month of their time to help support patients and visitors and assist in providing high-quality, compassionate care to the people of Medway and Swale. The hospital’s League of Friends and Hospital Radio Medway operate independently alongside them.
Anyone with an interest in health and wellbeing who is over the age of 18 is welcome to apply to become a volunteer at Medway Maritime Hospital. Volunteers are given a full induction, and training sessions are provided to help them in their role.
If you would like to join our team of volunteers or therapy dog team, please contact our Voluntary Services Team: Zoe Goodman, Voluntary Services Manager on 01634 825246 or zgoodman@nhs.net.
