To mark World Parkinson’s Day, (Thursday 11 April), we’re introducing Naveen, one of our brilliant specialist Parkinson’s nurses.
Born in Jamaica, Nurse Naveen Melbourne-Peart, worked as a surgical nurse before moving to England to work in the NHS. She became a specialist Parkinson’s nurse here at Medway five years ago.
“My interest in Parkinson’s Disease stemmed from my own personal experience as my mother had Parkinson’s. The resources available to her while living with the condition were very limited and I want others to never be in that position.”
Day to day Naveen is busy making a positive impact on patients’ lives along with the rest of the Parkinson’s Team. From home visits and making sure that patients have the medicine they need, to helping them get access to treatments such as speech therapy or occupational therapy. Plus, she is able to put patients in touch with day to day support services such as meals on wheels, befriending and benefits advice which allows people to live independently for as long as possible.
Naveen also visits her patients on the ward, making sure they take their medications on time, regardless of whether they are in hospital because of Parkinson’s or not, which helps their wellbeing and their recovery.
During her time here at Medway, Naveen has focused on helping hospital and social care colleagues learn more about the condition. She has created training to help hospital and nursing home staff spot the early warning signs, start treatment early and learn about related conditions that impact people living with Parkinson’s. So far she has given training to 150 people and hopes to do more.
“I feel proud that, through the work I do, and that of our Parkinson’s team, we can help to make a positive difference to our patients affected by this life altering condition.”
Look out for our iconic Clock Tower, which will be lit up blue for World Parkinson’s Day.
