To mark Baby Loss Awareness Week (Wednesday 9 to Tuesday 15 October), our Vilomah Maternity Bereavement Team will be hosting a series of events.
An Annual Service of Remembrance and Hope will be held at St Augustine’s Church, Rock Avenue, Gillingham, from 3pm on Saturday 11 October.

A ‘Wave of Light’ service, for people to light a candle in memory of all babies gone too soon, will take place live on the Medway Maternity Facebook page at 7pm on Wednesday 15 October.
Our iconic clock tower will also be lit up in pink and blue throughout the week to help raise awareness.
The Vilomah Maternity Bereavement Team supports parents through pregnancy loss in the hospital’s maternity department, gynaecology department and the neonatal unit.
Thanks to the charity Abigail’s Footsteps, a bespoke bereavement suite called Abigail’s Place was opened at the hospital in 2016. The bereavement suite provides parents with a safe and comfortable space to spend precious time with their baby after they have died. Described as the gold standard of bereavement suites, it is something the hospital is immensely proud of.
Abigail’s Footsteps also donated a new version of the Abi Cooling Cot in December 2024. It helps to keep the baby at a cool temperature meaning the child can stay with their parents for longer, giving them the chance to grieve and say goodbye in their own time. As well as helping the parents to make memories during a particularly traumatic and difficult time it also helps them to start to deal with their grief.
With the help of other charities, the team can offer the following memory making and support to families following the loss of a baby:
- Cherished whispers – memory boxes containing invaluable mementoes for the family to share with their baby.
- Making Miracles – Memory Bears, storybooks and bereavement counselling.
- Aching Arms – teddy bears that parents can carry out of the hospital, so their arms are not empty.
- 4Louis – Moses baskets, blankets, towels, sibling packs, religious packs for different faiths.
- First Touch Tiles – Free ceramic hand and footprint tiles.
- SANDS – Hand and footprint kits.
