Charlotte Steen is the fifth finalist to be shortlisted for the Hospital Hero category in our annual Star Awards.
The 26-year-old works as a mental health liaison nurse for our children’s emergency department and inpatient ward.
Charlotte said: “I form a particular bond and rapport with my patients because if you don’t, you’re not going to have any effect on them.
“If they haven’t got that trust – especially in mental health patients – they’re not going to do what you ask.”
Charlotte was nominated for the special award, sponsored by the Kent Messenger, by a mother of a young patient she recently cared for.
The mother said: “Without Charlotte going above and beyond her responsibilities, my daughter would honestly be in worse place both with her physical and emotional health.
“The role of a paediatric mental health nurse should be celebrated and recognised and what better way than saying thank you in awarding Charlotte with your Hospital Hero Award.”
Speaking about her nomination to KentOnline Charlotte said: “I think this is the biggest thank you that someone can give you.
“Those days when you’re here well past when your shift should have ended and the weekends spent at home thinking about your patients – it’s very nice to know that it’s appreciated.”
Look out for stories about the other four finalists Emily Brown, Dr Saadia Shah, Michelle Fitzpatrick and Shannon O’Kane.
The winner of the Hospital Hero Award will be announced at our awards ceremony on 13 June.
