Our frailty wards are set to benefit from a new initiative thanks to funding from The Medway Hospital Charity.
Namaste Care Boxes have been created for patients living with dementia or receiving end of life care to help them feel seen, heard and cared for while they are an inpatient with us.
The box contains a Bluetooth speaker to play a patient’s favourite music, hand lotion for a gentle and soothing hand massage, disposable razors and shaving cream, as well as aftershave, nail varnishes and disposable cotton face towels. The first Namaste Box has been introduced on Tennyson Ward.
Namaste Care Practitioner Emily Brown said: “Namaste Care focuses on honouring the individual beyond their medical needs, recognising the person, their memories, and the life they have lived. The items in the boxes were chosen to help promote dignity, relaxation and person-centred care but I couldn’t have put the boxes together without the charity’s help so I’m extremely grateful for the funding.”
.
In the coming weeks, staff will be invited to attend training sessions, run by Emily, on how to deliver Namaste Care. Once the training has been completed, further boxes will be distributed across the frailty wards here at Medway. It’s hoped the boxes and training will be rolled out at Sheppey Community Hospital in the near future too.
Emily said: “Thank you to everyone involved in helping bring this meaningful initiative to life.”
