It's National Apprenticeship Week (Monday 7 to Friday 11 February 2022)!

Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers, they also present amazing opportunities for people to upskill or qualify to work in a new role.

To celebrate, we’re sharing stories from some of our apprentices throughout the week.

First up is Multi-Skilled Technician Andrew Somerville.

Andrew is working towards a Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) apprenticeship, which he is due to complete in December 2023. He spoke about why he decided to do an apprenticeship with Medway NHS Foundation Trust:

“After completing a Level 2 apprenticeship in performing engineering operations with the Trust last year, which helped me on my new mechanical maintenance career path within the Estates Department, I decided to pursue a Level 3 apprenticeship course to widen my knowledge and better my skillset within my role at the hospital.

“Doing an apprenticeship offers more than learning full-time in a classroom as I get hands on learning and experience both in the workplace as well as at college.

“Once I have completed the apprenticeship it will help me to progress to more senior roles in the Trust - with the help of more training and experience.

“The current course has certainly been more challenging not only because it is more in depth but because I became a father for the first time just before starting this course so it has been a learning curve trying to balance home life and work while getting back to college life and studying again. Thankfully, you are very supported within the Trust - allowing on the job studying time, and senior staff supporting you with their knowledge and experience.

“The college tutors are also very supportive and approachable, and help you with any concerns or needs in the workplace and out, not just at college.

“If anyone is looking to progress their career or, like me, make a career change, I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to help you find your feet on the path you wish to take.

“I cannot thank Medway NHS Foundation Trust enough for the opportunity they have given me. I highly believe in NHS apprenticeship schemes training the next generation of NHS Heroes."

We believe in helping our staff to reach their full potential.
