Search begins for Medway Maritime Hospital Hero 2026

Medway Maritime Hospital has launched its annual Hospital Hero search, inviting patients, families, carers, and members of the public to nominate a member of staff who has made an exceptional difference to their care.

The Hospital Hero Award recognises one outstanding individual—clinical or non‑clinical—who has gone above and beyond in their role, demonstrating outstanding compassion, professionalism, and dedication.

The winner will be honoured at the hospital’s Star Awards ceremony on Thursday 16 July, where staff and volunteers who consistently put patients first are celebrated.

Siobhan Callanan, Interim Chief Executive at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s time once again to help us find our next Hospital Hero — and we need your nominations.

“This award shines a spotlight on staff who go the extra mile, show exceptional care, or make a real difference to patients and their loved ones.

“If someone has made your experience brighter, safer, or easier, please take a moment to nominate them as a Hospital Hero.”

Last year’s finalists showcased the breadth of compassion across the hospital:

A hostess credited by one family for helping them feel comfortable and welcome during an extremely worrying time
A doctor who has supported countless women through complex and emotionally challenging pregnancies
A children’s play specialist celebrated for making young patients and their families feel truly special during difficult times
A maternity support worker praised by one family for bringing light to some of their toughest days.

The 2025 Hospital Hero Award was presented to Liz McClaren, Children’s Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, who was recognised for her exceptional work supporting children with cancer through the hospital’s Children’s Outreach and Specialist Team.

Liz also established a children’s oncology fund, accessed through The Medway Hospital Charity, helping families with every day essentials and in tragic circumstances, supporting repatriation to home countries.

Anyone who works at Medway Maritime Hospital can be nominated, regardless of their role. To submit a nomination, complete the form explaining why your chosen staff member deserves to be the 2026 Medway Maritime Hospital Hero.

Nominations close at 5pm on Monday 20 April.
