Marcia Antunes is one of five finalists nominated for the 2025 Hospital Hero Award.
Our Hospital Hero Award recognises a hospital worker who has done something extraordinary or made a real difference to patients’ lives, or their friends or family, and is one of 11 awards to be presented at next month’s Medway Annual Star Awards.
It is a special award to celebrate the outstanding achievements and commitment of hospital staff, with members of the public asked to nominate their Medway Maritime Hospital Hero.
We would like to thank everyone who submitted a nomination to the Kent Messenger, the award sponsors, for our Hospital Hero Award.

Marcia, who works on our maternity ward as a hostess, was nominated for the award by a patient who was in hospital for two months after being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia during her pregnancy.
Her nomination read: “We built up a lovely relationship with Marcia, who got to know me and my husband, and our families.
“This lovely lady honestly went above and beyond her job description to make us feel comfortable and welcome at an extremely worrying and stressful time in our pregnancy.
“She honestly brightened up some really tough days.”
Marcia has worked at Medway as a hostess for two years, before that she spent seven years as a carer. Her role involves offering drinks and food to our patients.
Marcia said: “I just like to feed the mothers and then the mothers feed their babies. It’s amazing.
“I’ve always loved caring for others. It’s my passion, I love everything about it.”
For Marcia one of the most rewarding parts of her role is when she gets struggling new mothers who are not feeling their best to eat something.
She said: “We have a conversation and I’ll try and encourage her because she has to eat.
“Then they’ll just smile and say ‘Thank you Marcia for helping me’.”
On her nomination Marcia said: “If I won, I would be grateful.
“But, the most important thing is that I help someone – if I win or not, I want to see someone happy and well.”
