The National Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark has been awarded to Medway Maritime Hospital for the support it provides to newly registered healthcare professionals.
Preceptorship provides a period of guidance, support and structured learning to help newly registered healthcare professionals, such as nurses, midwives and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) to develop their knowledge and skills in their first year to ensure they can work as confident and competent practitioners as they transition from student to professional.
The Quality Mark, which is the national gold standard, was created in October 2022 when NHS England introduced the new national preceptorship framework for nursing as part of its plan to improve retention rates and improve the experience of new registrants. It is now used by Trusts across the country to benchmark themselves against.
To win the award the hospital’s Clinical Education Team had to submit an application to the national preceptorship team and meet two criteria.
It’s hoped the Quality Mark, which is valid for two years, will attract early career nurses, midwives and AHPs to the hospital as it indicates that its preceptorship programme will provide them with a firm foundation for their career development.
Sarah Vaux, Interim Chief Nursing Officer, said: “It’s really important to provide a supportive space for our staff to grown and learn.
“Our Clinical Education Team runs two preceptorships programmes. One for internationally educated nurses, midwives and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), and one for UK trained newly qualified nurses, nurse associates and AHPs. Both comprise of study days, a competency portfolio, structured meetings with preceptors and quality improvement projects.
“It is thanks to these robust, effective and supportive preceptorship programmes, both of which are designed to support the development of every newly registered healthcare professionals’ skills and empower them with the tools to navigate the challenges of the early stages of their careers, that the Trust has met all of the gold standards and subsequently received national recognition.
“Congratulations to everyone involved with the preceptorship programme who have worked really hard to achieve the Quality Mark award.”
