Staff and patients at Medway Maritime Hospital were delighted to receive a generous donation of desktop fans and bottles of water during the recent heatwave.

Global charity, Rapid Relief Team (RRT), contacted the Medway Hospital Charity team to offer support in helping to keep staff and patients cool and hydrated. Working together, they arranged for 75 fans and around 400 bottles of water to be handed out on what was the hottest day of the year, on Thursday 25 July. The hospital has already distributed 300 fans to keep patients and staff cool over the last few weeks and greatly appreciated the additional delivery.

The volunteers from RRT visited, among other areas, the Delivery Suite and the Plaster Room.

Senior Casting Practitioner, Jackie Gough, said: “The plaster room gets incredibly hot and there is little fresh air.  Some of our patients are in shock and pain and the heat adds to their discomfort.  The fans which have been donated to us will make a huge difference and we are incredibly grateful for the donation.  Our patients, and the staff working in the unit, will really feel the benefit and they will be well used.”

Vern Pollard, Local Team leader for RRT, said, “We aim to help as many local charities as we can and were keen to offer assistance to the hospital, especially during such intense weather.

“We made contact with the Medway Hospital Charity team earlier this week to ask what the hospital would benefit from and then put the wheels in motion to order fans and get them delivered as quickly as possible.

“It was nice to see how much the water and fans were appreciated and what difference they have made.  Hopefully they will make the summer slightly more bearable.”

Cheryl Jones, Fundraising Officer for the Medway Hospital Charity, added: “We would like to say a huge thank you to RRT for the incredibly generous donation, which is very much appreciated.”
