On Saturday 19 August 2023, leaders and colleagues proudly represented Medway NHS Foundation Trust for the first time in the LGBTQIA+ Medway Pride parade, which took place through Rochester and joined in with the vibrant, festival atmosphere.
An estimated 200 people took part in the parade and they were cheered on by a throng of spectators that lined the High Street. The parade was supported by Bloco Fogo Samba Band, The Loco Cabaret, plus local community groups, companies and organisations.
Members of the Trust’s executive team Jayne Black, Chief Executive, Gavin MacDonald, Chief Delivery Officer and Jo Palmer, Trust Chair, took part in the parade, alongside colleagues from across the Trust.
Jayne Black, Chief Executive, Medway NHS Foundation Trust said: “The huge crowd cheered us on during the parade procession through the historic heart of Rochester and it was very uplifting to hear their affection for the NHS. We all had a joyous time representing the Trust and the NHS, whilst celebrating Medway Pride.”
The Trust values our diverse community, and seeks to reflect it in our staff and in the quality of our care. The Trust’s participation in the parade seeks to give assurance to LGBTQIA+ people that we are an inclusive and supportive employer, and a safe and respectful healthcare provider.
The NHS promises to be a safe environment for the whole community, including LGBTQIA+ communities. The Trust uses the NHS Rainbow Badge Scheme, so individual members of staff can demonstrate to patients that they have a personal commitment to LGBTQIA+ patients. The scheme provides additional information and online resources to help them demonstrate this commitment.
The Trust is always striving to increase its engagement with the local community and is increasing the number of outreach events within Medway and Swale.
