Our children’s nursery garden has been transformed just in time for summer thanks to a group of volunteers.
Tiny Tugs Day Nursery, here at Medway Maritime Hospital, was given a makeover by staff from MHS Homes after they approached the nursery as part of its Day for Kent volunteering initiative, which sees employees spend a day, helping a local good cause, charity or community group.
A group of 16 volunteers dug up overgrown raised beds and added fresh soil, repainted the wooden pergola and planters, cut the grass, removed weeds and jet washed the patio area.
Children and staff are already enjoying the outdoor space and are looking forward to spending more time outdoors throughout the year.
Nursery Manager Amanda Richards said: “Our garden area plays a huge role in helping our children embrace nature, develop curiosity and enjoy the benefits of being outside.
“Due to limited resources, and time, we struggled to maintain the garden over the winter months. But thanks to staff from MHS Homes giving up their time to come in and do the work, the garden is now a safe and engaging area for our children to enjoy.
“It also means we can now grow flowers and vegetables which help support sustainability learning, and give children a natural environment that enriches their development.”
Stewart Tucker, Estates Assistant Delivery Manager for MHS Homes who led the project and coordinated the team’s involvement, said: “Everyone worked incredibly hard throughout the project and took great pride in improving the space for the children and nursery staff.
“Seeing the transformation come together and knowing the difference it will make to the children made the experience particularly rewarding.”
