Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high. There are two main types of Diabetes - type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
Diabetes is a fast-growing condition in the UK. Currently, there are about 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK, nearly three times as many as in 1996, when there were 1.4 million. By 2025, it is estimated that 5 million people will have diabetes in the UK.
Our diabetes service includes a ward-based specialised diabetes nurse service that aims to provide care and treatment, and to help our patients to effectively manage their condition. Our nursing team provide diabetes advice to patients, nursing staff and doctors. The ward-based diabetes nursing team works closely with the community based diabetes specialist nursing service to ensure joined up discharge planning for patients returning home after their hospital stay.
We also provide outpatient services including children transferring to adult care, and an insulin pump service.
