Our services
The paediatric surgery department performs a wide range of procedures to treat a variety of conditions in children and young people, including:
- Abdominal wall hernia e.g. epigastric, inguinal, umbilical
- Anal conditions
- Circumcision for medical reasons
- Hydrocele
- In-growing toenail
- Laparoscopy
- Skin lumps and swelling
- Tongue tie (for children aged 6 months and above)
- Undescended testes.
We also provide:
- Surgical and urology clinics
- Surgical support to the Level 3 neonatal unit
- Surgical review of paediatric inpatients
- Hub and spoke working relationship with KCH for tertiary paediatric service
- Postoperative follow-up for local children who had complex surgery in London.
Preparing for surgery
Children are well prepared for surgery through our paediatric pre-assessment services which also include:
- Making sure your child is fit for surgery, and help you all prepare for surgery
- A tour of the surgical ward and play area, and desensitisation tours for anxiety reduction
- Bespoke pathways for children with neurodevelopmental, learning, or behavioural needs
- Healthy living and lifestyle advice with referral to our community services to get fitter for surgery.
Please bring a list of medications, any clinic letters from other hospitals and your child’s red book to all clinic visits.
What to expect
We’ve made a video with some of our friends to help young people and their grown ups know what to expect when they come in to hospital, and how we can support them.
Following an assessment, usually by your GP, a referral will be made for your child to be seen by a member of our paediatric surgery team at Medway Hospital.
