Respiratory and Sleep Department
Jade Ward
Blue Zone
Level 1
The sleep service, run by a team of sleep and respiratory physiologists, provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic investigations for respiratory diseases and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Tests include, spirometry and flow volume loops to measure airflow through the airways, full lung function tests to measure airflow, capacity and efficiency of the lungs, bronchodilator reversibility tests to assess the response to medications, respiratory muscle weakness tests to determine the strength of the diaphragm and other muscles involved during breathing.
Diagnostic tests can be completed in-lab for the investigation of primarily Parasomnias or Narcolepsy while other sleep investigations can be completed routinely in the comfort of your own home. These include overnight sleep studies (Respiratory Polygraphy and Nocturnal Overnight Oximetry’s).
The department also offers treatment for OSA, specifically continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and Auto Positive Airway Pressure (APAP), which involves wearing a mask at night to assist the airway and decrease sleep disruption.
